VerdelhoVerdelho is a native Portuguese white grape variety. It is believed that it has been planted in continental Portugal since as early as the 15th century. Once, it was one of the most widely planted noble grape variety in Madeira for making Madeira dessert wine. Of late, its plantings has been dwindling down and the regional authorities are trying hard to bring Verdelho back in business. It is a early ripening grape variety with thick skin. Usually, Verdelho produces an off dry to medium-dry style wines. Young Verdelho, show prominent fruit characted and when aged, it assumes high acidity. It is also grown in the Galicia region of Spain where it is called Godello. Other countries successfully producing Verdelho are Australia and Argentina.
