Overlooked Wine Nation

Old eastern European legend says that Thracian god of Wine was born in Romania and It is believed that tradition of making Wine could be as old as 6000 years in Romania. If this is true, Romania can be adjudged as the oldest Wine producing nation in the Europe.

Romania is located in the south-east of Europe on the coast of Black Sea. Most of the vineyards in Romania are planted around Danube delta because of its mild grape-vine friendly climate and rich soil. Romania had a variety of native grape types most of which were destroyed during phylloxera pest attack in 1880s. Later, more common varieties such as Merlot, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon were introduced from western Europe.
