It wouldn't be hyperbolic if we say that Wine is a French legacy to the World. Romans begun producing Wine in Bordeaux during first century. After the fall of Roman Empire circa fifth century, the monasteries rapidly spread Christianity and the art of Wine making throughout the Europe. Monks were making wine in Burgundy during as early as sixth century. Religion and Wine were laced together and monks were involved in vinification till as late as eighteenth century. French cellar-master monk, Dom Pierre Pérignon, made one of the most famous contributions by inventing sparkling Wine called Champagne.

France has a long tradition of cultivating Wine and is a home to chic Wine producing regions such as Bordeaux and Burgundy, which boast of some of the most expensive and prestigious Wines in the world. Yet, the French Wine industry is facing problems due to stiff competition from the new world Wines. The fact that per capita Wine consumption in France has been declining over the past decade poses further challenges to the people involved in French Wine trade.
